Young Artists Concerto Competition

The Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for its Young Artists competition.  The winner(s) will be featured with the Orchestra on its September 10, 2017 concert and receive a prize of $250.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicants will be 14 – 19 years old on September 10, 2017.
  2. Applicants will be full time residents of: Allegheny, Butler, Beaver, Washington, or Westmoreland Counties.
  3. The Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh reserves the right to determine eligibility.

Competition Information:

  1. All applicants must choose from the provided list of acceptable repertoire that they wish to use for the competition.  
  2. The applicant will provide a clearly marked audio CD of themselves performing the complete concerto that they have chosen.  The recording may be accompanied or unaccompanied.   In lieu of a CD contestants may also upload their performance to YouTube. Please, be sure your recording can be reviewed on the website before sending in your application.
  3. Applicants will send the recording or link to Youtube video, a completed and signed application, and a non-refundable $25.00 application check postmarked no later than July 31, 2017 to: The Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh, 786 Melbourne St, Pittsburgh, PA, 15217. Please make checks payable to “The Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh”.   
  4.  In the case of a double concerto, each applicant must fill out form, but one application fee is sufficient.
  5. The Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh Jury will consist of highly qualified professional musicians.
  6. Up to 8 Finalists will be notified by August 4, 2017.
  7. All decisions of the Audition Panel will be final.

Finalist Audition Information:

  1. Finalists will audition in person for the Audition Panel on August 20, 2017 on the Carnegie Mellon Campus.  Auditions will be held between 1-4pm.
  2. Finalists will each be allotted 15 minutes and will perform as much of their concerto possible in that time.  Jury will determine when time has expired.  
  3. Finalist may perform with or without music.  
  4. Finalists must provide an accompanist for the audition. A piano will be provided.
  5. Finalists must use original manuscripts and provide 3 copies of the concerto for use by the Jury during auditions.
  6. All decisions of the Audition Panel will be final.
  7. The Jury may declare no winner if expected criteria needed to perform with an orchestra are not met.
  8. Finalists will be notified of the decision of the Audition Panel by August 21, 2017.

Competition Winner Information:

  1. The Young Artist Competition Winner will receive a $250.00 scholarship.   In the case of a double concerto, each winner will receive $250.
  2. The competition winner will provide a short biography and publicity photo for use in the program and media outlets.
  3. The competition winner will be available for rehearsals with the orchestra on Sept. 7 (7-10pm) and 9 (9am-1pm), 2017 at The First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh.
  4. Performance will be held at The First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh on September 10, 4pm.
  5. The Young Artist Competition Winner will receive a professional audio recording of the performance.
